Hey

Great article man, few years back I was looking into this but the php stuff they had at the time weren't very good at handling multiple tables and relations. Great to see PHP has finally caught up with ruby. Definitly will use this in my next project.

Cheers,
chris

Cool! I'll take a look at the system you made.
Your nickname made me think you were mocking me hehe.
Thanks for dropping a comment

I used a system like this together with Kohana for several projects but it generates lots of cruft in your code. I have written my own ORM instead and it does everything a scaffolder does but just in the code itself; so no configuration is needed, no accessors are needed etc. You don't even need the SQL, it generates tables and columns on the fly. All by itself.
Because I have been using POG and POG-like systems and I feel really comfortable with my own http://redbeanphp.com I am curious what you think about my ORM layer and if you can provide feedback.

Whether or not using a framework is wise merely depends on the size of your project and the amount of time available to finish the job. Oh and the quality and knowledge of the developer of course. :-) It's great that today you have the choice whether or not to use such a beast.

@paris : Wow, just wow. I think the beauty of frameworks is that they typically hide very complex code that you as a developer should not be creating in the first place.
In this regard the definition of 'framework' can vary from person to person but I have NEVER found a framework that limited me it may obscure things but it never limits you since you're ultimately building something on the original language (PHP, Java, whatever). Therefore 'hiding' behind a framework could otherwise be written as 're-using code' which is a good practice to begin with.

Frameworks do make you program in a way the framework is compatible with.
The difference is that frameworks often resemble proved programming / design patterns, you'd have to look into the framework itself if it resembles your way of working.
CakePHP for one is based around the MVC design pattern and seems to be doing a pretty fine job

Sometimes not working with a framework feels like reinventing stuff all over again. I believe POG relieves you of a lot of burden.

I believe it's more a matter of taste which of the options your prefer.

Programming is all about doing things your way??

imho programmings is all about making use of components that are already there, and do stuff so you don't have to! I've no experience with PHP, but I don't see frameworks as a limitation, you can use them when they make your life easier, and where not, you don't.
